There are lots of critical appraisal tools to help you judge the quality of individual population health intervention studies.

One of the more comprehensive tools (your recommended reading for this week) was developed by Public Health Ontario: Meta-tool for quality appraisal of public health evidence (PDF).
The National Collaborating Centre for Methods and Tools (NCCMT) has a series of helpful videos on its YouTube site regarding the critical appraisal of public health evidence: NCCMT videos.
